Video Review: American Chic Black Quilted Chain Bag

by Vahni on June 14, 2010

Are you one of those ladies who has lusted for the Marc Jacobs Quilted Stam Bag since the day it came out? I know I am. I just love Marc Jacobs bags—they have a look all their own, and since I am lucky enough to have a Venetia myself, I know they are extremely well-made. But unfortunately, when they first hit the shelves, they are so expensive. Sigh.

So listen up…as you can see from the photos above, we got our hands on a sick Stam lookalike! And we decided that it was time to take ITC reviews to the next level. So rather than just seeing photos of the American Chic Black Quilted Chain Bag, we shot some video so you can truly see how this bag translates in real life.

As I mentioned in the video, I was pleasantly surprised by how real this faux leather bag looks. And I am a very hard sell…honestly, when I first read the details about the bag, I wasn’t too excited about the fact that it’s not leather. But I’m totally sold! Seriously! I have actually carried this bag around and it looks incredible on.

So what else do you need to know about the American Chic Black Quilted Chain Bag? Well, despite the fact that the hardware is not brass, it’s still a nice goldtone, and has enough weight for it to look and feel good. Inside, the bag is cloth-lined, which is a big deal—nothing worse than a plasticky interior. It has a generous helping of pockets and zips and compartments to help keep your personal items organized.

Bottom Line

This is one of the best faux leather, designer-inspired bags I’ve seen in recent time. It is well-made, lovely to look at, roomy inside, and totally believable. I’m sure you’ll get your 50 bucks’ worth out of it, and then some.

PROS:

  • Man-made “leather” totally looks like the real thing.
  • Good quality. A stunning Stam-esque bag.
  • Major price! Such a steal at under $50.

CONS:

  • Metal clasp has slight discoloration, uneven tone.
  • There were some loose threads in the quilting.

Hi,
I was wondering where I can find a similar necklace like the one you’re wearing in your photograph? Thanks so much. I really love this website for recognizing fashion and helping people find cheap alternatives!

After discovering this bag, I have a new definition of gorgeous. Wonderful detailing and props to American Chic with the synthetic leather…it is spotless and so believable. I also love the roominess and the longer chain as well as the shorter handles. For less than $50, you’d go wrong not to invest in this bag for your collection. Thanks, Vahni, for such a great review on this product! You were thorough and covered all the aspects of the bag that I was interested in, like appearance, durability, and available space. Hats off to you! By the way, love the video review…I hope to see more :) Thanks again, InTheirCloset – you always deliver!

Valerie…thank you! That necklace is from this absolutely stunning boutique in Sydney, Australia called Becker Minty. You should Google it just to have a peek at the interior…amazing!

In terms of something similar, I found a CRACKER of a copy for a lot less than what I paid for mine. Check out this 36″ Black Kukui Nut Necklace for $15.95: http://www.amazon.com/36-Black-Kukui-Necklace-Chunky/dp/B000MLBCIG. Can’t believe I found this for you! Lucky us!

Here are other options that are not as long:
Fantasy Jewelry Box has one (I’ve also reviewed another necklace from this company here on ITC). http://www.fantasyjewelrybox.com/n1089.html.

Here’s a 24″ chunky bead necklace that is $6! http://www.rubyplaza.com/item/650727-J0068/24×22-Long-CHUNKY-Faceted-Black

Will you leave us a comment if you end up buying the necklace? I’d so love to know. Thanks for visiting!

Alyssa, thank you so very much for your thoughtful comment! It’s so nice when people appreciate our efforts and perspectives. Hopefully we’ll have more video in the future. I have no reviews planned at the moment, but you never know what might come up.

If you want to see more video, at 8:00am on 6/18/2010 I’ll post my latest vlog on my blog, Grit and Glamour. The subject is nail polish…you’ll see my favorite products and colors.

Please check in with us here at ITC again soon, and thanks again.

Vahni,

Do you prefer the “American Chic Black Quilted Chain Bag ($49.75, American Chic)” = http://www.americanchic.net/satchelquiltedchainbagblack.html
or the “Handbag Heaven Sami Quilted Handbag ($54.95, Handbag Heaven)” = http://www.handbagheaven.com/sami-quilted-handbag.html ?

Vahni June 28, 2010 at 12:56 PM

Kassandra,

Having never seen the Handbag Heaven bag with my own eyes, and having never clutched it in my own two hands, I have to go with the bag from American Chic. As you can see from the video, I have personal experience with that bag and can vouch that it is a looker and good quality for the price.

Hope this helps!

Kassandra June 28, 2010 at 8:53 PM

Vahni,

I really liked that video and it did persuade me to want to purchase the bag unfortunately the only bad thing is that it is sold out and they won’t have the bag available for another 4-8 weeks. That’s why I asked you about the other bag from Handbag Heaven but since you haven’t reviewed it, I want to wait for the American Chic bag. I’ve been looking for a really good cheap roomy bag that’s casual and after seeing your review, it was a winner. I guess I will wait for the American Chic bag to become available again. Thank you so much! Your reviews help out a lot with finding inexpensive items that will still make you look fashionable.

Kassandra, so flattered that you found the video to be valuable! Hopefully American Chic will restock soon. Let me know what you think if you do end up ordering the bag.

Brenda November 22, 2010 at 11:37 AM

Hi Vahni, so nice of you to review on the bag. I wanted to buy the bag but it’s not available in the site anymore.

I’ve found two sites and I need your advice badly.

http://www.yaya21.co.uk/woman/products/product?Id=1189&ItemId=1250&ImageId=909

or

https://www.handbagheaven.com/sami-quilted-handbag.html

thank you and Cheers.

Vahni November 22, 2010 at 2:31 PM

Brenda, thanks for your comment! I took a look at the sites and I like the first one on Yaya21 better. It looks more like real leather.

Hope it works for you!

Daisy August 13, 2011 at 2:13 AM

Hey! I really love the bag!
Since American Chic closed their site, is there any way to get the same bag you have got there?

Daisy

Irina August 13, 2011 at 1:33 PM

Hi Daisy, feel free to check out the MJ Stam bag alternatives provided here: http://intheircloset.com/marc-jacobs-quilted-stam-bag/

I love the bag you purchased from Americanchic.net. I’m disappointed that the site closed down for some odd reason. after watching your review on this bag, I would’ve bought it in a heartbeat! I had to go elsewhere, handbagheaven.com, to retrieve a similar bag. It hasn’t arrived yet but hopefully the leather will look real. The interior I noticed from reviews looks different from yours. it doesn’t have the middle zipper and it use to come in black and cream interior lining, but only has zebra lining instock. Quite upsetting. If only I knew the alternate site to use at the moment, I would’ve definitely purchased the bag from yaya21 instead hopefully identical to your Americanchic one. GREAT and persuasive review. You should definitely do more!
