Google Reader To Be Shut Down on Monday! Move Your Blog Subscriptions Now!

Google Reader

If you read this blog through Google Reader, you’ll probably know that Google will be shutting down the service tomorrow on July 1st, 2013. It has been announced a few months ago, yet it has taken me until yesterday to move all my feed subscriptions to another RSS Service (I am now reading all my blogs via Bloglovin’).

I figured there are many users just like me who ignore the news until it might be too late (I admit I’ve always loved Google Reader and am very sad to see it go). So if you don’t want to lose all your valuable blog bookmarks, here are my tips on how and where to move to.

First Steps First

Before you start thinking about which service to switch to after the death of Google Reader, go and save your bookmarks NOW and export them via Google’s Takeout service (select “Google Reader” and click on “Create archive”). The exporting process will save your beloved blog subscriptions in a zip-file. Download it to your hard drive, so you always have a backup of your RSS subscriptions on hand.

Choose a New Service

There are many free Google Reader alternatives available such as Bloglovin’, Feedly and Digg Reader.

Personally, I decided to move my subscriptions to Bloglovin’ because it’s a fave among fashion bloggers and also because it’s a web-based service that can be easily accessed from anywhere and has a super easy Google Reader import function available (see here). I was able to import my 700+ subscriptions in a matter of minutes! Yay to that!

Of course, there are lots of other great services that will do the job just as good. If you need more alternatives, check out these articles:

Last but not least: Don’t forget to follow In Their Closet on Bloglovin’ or, if you’ll use a different service, this is our feed URL:

Goodbye, Google Reader! It’s been nice with you.

P.S.: You can also stay up-to-date with what’s new and going on here via our Facebook and Twitter! See you on the other side!
