Real vs. Steal – Givenchy Multi Strap Wedges

by Irina on September 5, 2010

UPDATE: This post has been updated on September 05, 2010. Scroll down to see the new add.

How kickass are these shiny multi strap wedges by Givenchy? When I first saw the footwear collection for the S/S 2010 collection I was unsure if fast fashion chains would answer the call by replicating these extreme almost fetish-style shoes. But surprisingly a lot of them did and we’ve had several of the Givenchy shoes available for those on a lighter shoe shopping budget.

Joe’s Jeans who are now also making footwear have copied Givenchy in the past, so it didn’t come as a surprise that they’ve done it again. Available in black leather or grey suedecj.

Is it just me, or are there suddenly scores of wonderful wedges coming out of the woodwork? Like these swoontastic Crisscross Wedge Sandals from Givenchy? Don’t they look like they were designed especially for It girl Leigh Lezark?

I’ve got to admit, put “Givenchy” before anything, and I’m pretty much in love. But as much as I wish those Crisscross Wedge Sandals were on my feet, at a whopping $1.174.50, I’ve already put that little fantasy to bed. Thankfully, the “Gonzalo” Wedge Sandals by BCBGeneration run a very close second. And they look extraordinarily comfy. Available in black lycra mesh, silver ash, and buttermilk.

Black leather. A screamingly hot stiletto. Buckles. How do I love thee, Givenchy? Let me count the ways. One of my favorite trends of the last several years is the reintroduction and reinterpretation of the bootie. And Givenchy’s Slouchy Thong Ankle Boots are a winning pair, I must say.

UPDATE (08/31/2010): Woohoo! Here’s another fantastic Givenchy alternative which is only about half the price of the Marciano booties by Jessica Simpson. Available in black, camel & dark brown.

Marciano “Milap” Booties

I’m sure there are thousands of working-class fashionistas who regularly fantasize about being able to plunk $1.150 down on a pair of booties, at-whim. Even if that fantasy never comes to fruition, you can still indulge your inner diva with the “Milap” Booties by Marciano. Like the Givenchy pair, they’re black, buckled, and bold—and while they’re no steal deal, $247.95 beats the hell out of more than a grand, don’t you think?

I personally love Lauren Conrad because she wears, re-wears and even shares so much of her wardrobe like all “regular” girls do worldwide. Case in point: these Givenchy sandals. I only hope that next time she breaks them out of her closet, we see a little more color!

These badass Givenchy ankle boots would give an edge to any outfit. Who knew patchwork could look so chic? I’m loving the high shine of the studs and the small touch of gold. The good news is they’re on sale at Stylebop!

Marciano “Symone” Open-toe Ankle Boots

While I love the killer Givenchy booties, their high price tag is bringing the pain, so we’ve found a similar pair for less than half the price. The Marciano version doesn’t have the same subtle gold detailing or gorgeous glossy studs. However, they still give off the same badass vibe with a touch of pewter and for under $250, I’ll take them.

For the last couple weeks I’ve had quite the passionate love affair with Givenchy. It really hit me out of nowhere because I remember being totally underwhelmed by the S/S 2010 collection first, but now I’m starting to warm up to the collection (minus the conehead hats, they’re still a big no). The footwear range of this collection was bold; Riccardo Tisci’s ultra-high chunky platform wedges certainly weren’t for the faint of heart. And while they’re not something I’m seeing myself rocking anytime soon, I still admire them for what they are: pieces of wearable art that is.

Joe’s Jeans “Lilly” Wedge Booties

Did you know Joe’s Jeans does footwear besides… jeans? Well, now you know and apparently they like getting inspired by high fashion brands as you can clearly see their “Lilly” wedge booties have quite a few Givenchy references. They basically just rounded the edges and called it a shoe. Also, do you happen to notice the almost twin-like similarities between the JC “Dippers” and these “Lilly” booties? Makes me wonder if they’re just a rebranded version of the JCs but with a higher price tag?!

Trouve “Trina” Wedge Sandals

Another great alternative to the real Givenchys are these budget-friendly wedges by Trouve. They’ve been tamed in terms of look and are not as extreme as the Givenchys, but this makes them a lot more wear- and manageable. Available in black or nude.

ALDO “Gersten” Sandal Bootie Wedges

Finally, let me present ALDO‘s take on the Givenchy wedges to you. The “Gersten”. The streamlined look and the lower platform makes this shoe probably the most wearable Givenchy knockoff out of the 4 and it’s also the cheapest Givenchy look-a-like at $100.

At first glance, I hear bratty little Veruca’s voice in my head: “Daddy, I want the Golden Ticket!“. Though Willy Wonka wasn’t shelling out shoes, if he was, these would be them! 2 years ago Givenchy debuted these metallic gladiator wedges. That was long before the wedge craze of 2010, so fashion-forward would be putting it mildly. Though we don’t know the exact price, it’s safe to say you would have needed plenty of Gobstoppers (Wonka speak for wads of cash) to walk away with them.

Michael Antonio “Hail” Wedges

There’s something tricky about metallics. A slightly off fabric or color can make a gorgeous design look cheap and plasticy. So you can imagine my fear when I first heard about this alternative. Now I don’t say this often, so listen up. The steal looks far better than the real. Michael Antonio has created a sturdy looking pair of shoes in a gold that doesn’t make me cringe. Not even close to cringing. In fact, at a price like this, I’d say we have the golden ticket! – Sorry Veruca. Available in gold, black & silver.

Givenchy‘s S/S 2010 collection was one of those collections that had to grow on me. First I was like “Where’s the color? What is it with all those stripes?” – I really wasn’t impressed. I’m still hesitant about the dirty-ish head-to-toe tribal looks and the weird conehead hats, but the rest I learned to love. Especially the striped blazer looks. See my take on one of the Givenchy runway looks below. You like?

These black strappy sandals by Givenchy are just kick-ass. I wouldn’t necessarily wear them with a knee-length dress like Julianne Moore did below (the ankle straps cut off at a rather unflattering point leaving her look sort of stumpy), but I’d totally rock these babies with leggings, jeans or a short skirt/mini dress.

UPDATE (05/26/2010): The Michael Antonio knockoffs didn’t get too many positive reviews, so if you love the Givenchy style and are willing to spend some cash on a high quality knockoff, try these sandals by Matiko. Available in black or brown.

If you’re digging the style, but frown upon paying the designer price (original retail price for the Givenchys was a whopping $1.150), leave it to Michael Antonio to satisfy your shoe needs while still staying on budget. His “Tazara” strappy sandals are an identical copy of the banded Givenchy heels and they come in either black, tan, red or white. L.O.V.E.!
