Real vs. Steal – Cartier Love Bracelet

If you have an Instagram account, follow fashion bloggers or just love jewelry in general, then I’m sure you’re well aware of Cartier‘s famous “Love” bracelet. Designed by Aldo Cipullo in 1969, the bracelet quickly became popular for its intentional resemblance in function to medieval chastity belts because of its extraordinary locking mechanism. Unlike traditional bracelets, the “Love” bracelet is designed to be opened only by using a special screwdriver that is supplied with every bracelet. The screwdriver is also available in the form of a necklace, allowing the bracelet to be “locked” onto one person, while the “key” is kept around the neck of another, as a symbol for their commitment to their relationship. Luckily, the “Love” bracelet can be opened with any standard slotted screwdriver (just in case things don’t work out with your better half, I guess ūüėČ). Although slightly confining, I think it’s a romantic gesture and a very beautiful sign of love, but most of all is it a very expensive one at $6.600 for the 18K yellow gold version. There’s definitely a lot of commitment neccessary for such a splurge purchase.

In the last few years, I always felt attracted to these oversized, men’s like Michael Kors-type of watches, but lately I’ve been more and more finding myself flirting with the idea to purchase one of these tiny, feminine, classic women’s watches such as the “Tank Anglaise” by Cartier. It’s such a timeless design and I have no doubt I could still wear it in either 5 or 50 years from now on and still look great. But $33.900? We don’t even need to begin the discussion of possibly purchasing or saving up for it because it’s way, way out of my price league…or universe even.

Update (05/02/2015): Found another great Cartier Tank Anglaise steal alternative by Vince Camuto. Available for $125 $90.23 (sale price!) in either gold-, silver- or rosegold-tone.

Juicy Couture “Darby” Watch

However, a few days ago I happened to stumble upon this set of watches by Juicy Couture and the design instantly reminded me of Cartier’s Tank Anglaise timepiece. There are a couple differences, but considering the huge price difference (the JC version cost either $195 (silver) or $250 (gold) compared to the $33.000 for the Cartier watch) I don’t think it’s much of a big deal.

$25.700 – I mean, WOW! Debating the price of this 18k yellow gold panther ring by Cartier is somehow absolutely pointless, isn’t it? There’s no way I could ever afford it or talk myself into splurging on it; not even in my wildest dreams! And I think it’s safe to say that none of you who read this blog accidentally happen to belong to the upper 10.000 and thus are one the lucky few who could actually afford this beautiful jewelry piece without having to worry about the hefty price. It certainly is an amazing statement ring though, isn’t it? I’m totally in love with it!

Pieces “Imukka” Tiger Ring

UPDATE (07/12/2013): Just found this amazing and budget-friendly Cartier Panther Ring look-a-like by Pieces which retails for a little over $15 and comes also in gunmetal! Yay!

ALDO “Vilanculos” Panther Ring

With this steal by ALDO we’re going from $25.700 down to $10 (sale price!)! Now that’s a major price cut, isn’t it? Of course, at this price there’s no way you could expect anything similar to the quality and craftmanship of a real Cartier piece, but if you’re just looking for a quick and budget-friendly way to get the same look, this ALDO ring should do the trick. Also available in silver. Raaaawr!
