Posting a steal find for an Alexander McQueen item always makes me a little sad because I feel very strongly about the brand and the designer and would like to be able to support it by buying the real deal, however my budget says otherwise. McQueen’s iconic skull print scarves have been around for a while now and it didn’t take long before they became a celebrity staple. And who can blame them really? The scarves, which are now available in a million color combinations, are absolutely fabulous; scary skulls printed on delicate silk? Gotta love the contradiction. What’s not to love though? The price of almost $300, obviously.

While doing my daily browsing on Amazon I discovered that StyleInch have an incredibly similar pair of skull print chiffon scarves which they are selling for $29; a mere 1/10th of the original’s price. Sure, you can’t expect the same quality, but if you’re looking for inexpensive Alexander McQueen skull print scarf look-a-likes, this is the place to go. And the best part? Alexander Wang presented his Pre-Fall 2010 collection a few days ago and I have to admit I’m not impressed. Ever since his glorious Spring and Pre-Fall 2009 collections he just couldn’t live up to my expectations. Maybe Fall 2010 will reignite my love for his designs. Until then I’ll have to keep on drooling over his past creations, one of which is this beautifully draped asymmetrical jersey dress from his Pre-Fall 2009 collection. So simple yet so stylish.

Actually, that’s not quite true. Because… don’t we all just love Alaïa shoes? Well, I know I do. He can do both extravagant and simple and still color me impressed. For instance, I adore these studded suede booties – and so does Hollywood. Celebs like Jennifer Hudson, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Nicky Hilton have all been spotted wearing this style, each and every one of them looking fab in their Alaïa booties. Too bad you have to be either rich or famous to afford these studded stunners as they come with a hefty $2.448 price tag.

You know how I know we’re good? Because we never forget a shoe. Or a handbag. Or a face. OK, so not the last one. Back in the old days (you know, 2005) the fashion world saw the introduction to the “It Bag” – a bag that became every starlet’s must have accessory. One day, readers (stay with me), Mary Kate Olsen was spotted carrying a gorgeous black, studded bag that no one could identify but that everyone immediately wanted. A year later the bag (eventually attributed to the talented, Alexander Wang) was made available to the public. It was then known as “Coco”; it is now known as “Rocco”; I can afford neither one.

I have to be honest, the last time I shopped at Wet Seal I was looking for something to wear to the school dance (in other words, it was 1998), but by golly perhaps Wet Seal deserves another look! Real vs. Steal – Proenza Schouler PS1 Large Leather Satchel

Sometimes I really question my sanity. I will jump at the chance to buy and subsequently wear (all night long) a pair of 5 inch heels, however when it comes to bags I am much more comfort-conscious. I carry my Rebecca Minkoff cross-body purse more than any other bag in my closet, and it’s because it’s just so darn comfortable. I really love a cross-body bag because it distributes the weight of all your worldly possessions while simultaneously looking effortlessly chic. My new favorite bag to fall into this utopian category is the Proenza Schouler PS1 Large Leather Satchel. God, it’s a beauty, isn’t it? I’m particularly lusting after the gray color Leighton Meester is carrying. Unfortunately this satchel retails for $1.595. Yes, folks, life is cruel.

The bag might be too pricey for most of us at $495, but it’s still $1.100 cheaper than the original PS1 so I guess it does qualify as a steal. But wait! What light through yonder window breaks? ASOS‘s Leather Twist Lock Satchel is not an exact copy of the Proenza Schouler bag but it is so similar in all the ways that count (I considered seeing that Shakespeare reference through to the bitter end but didn’t want to bore you). I love the buttery looking leather and of course the long cross-body strap. I am also quite fond of the rich tan color. I truly think this is an excellent “inspired by” satchel. Now if only it came in gray…
